Biography
English painter, illustrator, printmaker, photographer and stage designer. One of the most recognized and influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. He studied at Bradford College of Art and the Royal College in London, where he won a gold medal in a diploma competition. An important moment in the painter's career was his move to California in 1964. Since then, the artist's paintings have been filled with saturated colors and clear chiaroscuro. They emanate the tranquility and decadence of the West Coast lifestyle. He immortalized modernist villas, water-sprinkled lawns and his friends. Compositions with swimming pools became important: "If you photograph them, they freeze in stillness, but when you use paint, these wavy lines continue to ripple" (https://tiny.pl/dkfsv). The artist's works are in major collections around the world. He has had solo exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Art Institute of Chicago and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.
