A monumental silver prize medal awarded to Joseph Johann Krätzer by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Archduchy of Austria below the Enns, corresponding to present-day Lower Austria. The type is dated in the literature and auction records to 1884.
Established in the Habsburg Monarchy in 1850, the chambers of commerce and industry represented the interests of entrepreneurs, craftsmen and industrialists, advised on economic policy and supported the development of modern manufacturing and trade. The medals they awarded were prestigious professional distinctions, providing official recognition of the recipient’s achievements.
In the context of Krätzer’s two earlier distinctions—a second-class award at the Sydney International Exhibition of 1879 and a medal from the Lower Austrian Industrial Exhibition held in Vienna in 1880—the present medal may be regarded as the culmination of his documented exhibition and professional career. Together, the three personalised medals form an exceptional group tracing the recipient’s progress from international success to official recognition by a regional chamber of commerce.
The medal was created by Anton Scharff (1845–1903), one of the foremost Austrian medallists of the second half of the 19th century. Associated with the Vienna Mint, Scharff became head of its Academy of Engraving in 1882. His work played an important role in revitalising Austrian medallic art.
The obverse depicts the seated personifications of Commerce and Industry. Commerce wears a petasos, the traditional headgear of Mercury, and holds a caduceus symbolising exchange, communication and prosperous trade. Industry holds a centrifugal governor, one of the most characteristic components of the steam engine, symbolising mechanisation, precision and modern manufacturing. At their feet sits a winged Genius embodying creative thought, invention and progress. The composition is completed by shields bearing the arms of Lower Austria and the imperial double-headed eagle.
The reverse features an elaborately decorated cartouche individually engraved with the recipient’s name: JOSEPH JOH. KRÄTZER. It is surrounded by palm branches and ornamental decoration emphasising the ceremonial and prestigious nature of the award.
Offered in its original period presentation case.
An attractive example with finely executed, high relief and natural patina.
