Cover slightly worn, slight damage to the spine of Vol. 1; otherwise in good condition. On the front title page, a printed note reads: “This book was printed in Sweden as a gift from the Swedish Government for the reconstruction of Polish culture.” The work was first published in 1938.
S. Banach (1892–1945)—mathematician, leading representative of the Lviv School of Mathematics, full professor at the University of Lviv, member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Lviv (1939–1941). Banach was one of the pioneers and leading figures in functional analysis, known, among other things, for formulating the contraction theorem and defining Banach spaces. He also worked in set theory, where he formulated the sphere partition paradox together with the logician Alfred Tarski, and was the author of school and academic textbooks on mathematics and mechanics (Wikipedia).
