PORTRAIT OF A NOBLEMAN IN ARMOUR WITH A CHAIN OF ORDERS
Half-length portrait with allonge wig facing right, against a cloudy background. His aristocratic status is documented by the red cloak. The chain with the Order of St Michael was founded in 1693 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Joseph Clemens of Bavaria. This in turn indicates membership of the Cologne-Bavarian nobility. Among those who were honoured with the order was the hereditary marshal Ferdinand von Plettenberg. Oil on canvas. 80 x 62 cm.
