THE DEATH OF THE VIRGIN MARY
Oil/ tempera on softwood.
56 x 48 cm.
Upper Rhine, ca. 1480.
The almost square panel painting was probably created as part of a multi wing altar with the subject of the life of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin is shown on her deathbed, surrounded by the twelve apostles. As is often the case in late Gothic depictions, the details are impressive, showing both the interiors and furnishings of the late Middle Ages.
