Oil on canvas
cm. 125x90,5. Framed
The painting depicts David slaying Goliath, a subject popular in seventeenth-century painting following Caravaggio’s celebrated treatment of the theme (Galleria Borghese, Rome). While reflecting this prototype, the present work adopts a more lyrical interpretation, with affinities to the Caravaggesque painting of Claude Vignon and, particularly, the Neapolitan naturalism of Battistello Caracciolo as Nicola Spinosa suggest to the owner.
