Luigi Rossini (1790–1857) – “Interior View of the Basilica of St. John Lateran” – circa 1830
An important etching and burin engraving on paper by the architect and engraver Luigi Rossini, considered the spiritual heir to Piranesi for the grandeur of his Roman views. The work depicts the interior of the Basilica of St. John Lateran with extraordinary perspectival precision, highlighting the monumentality of the naves and the sculptural decoration of the Borromini niches. The engraving is distinguished by its crisp linework and the profound modulation of light and shadow, which lend a solemn luminosity to the scene. Published in Rome by the artist.
