The Order was awarded by national and foreign military personnel for professional qualities and effective service to the Armed Forces in peacetime. The Order is awarded four degrees: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander and Knight. By decree 12146 of December 31, 1974, the Order will be called the "Hero of Freedom of General José Miguel Lanza" ("Prócer de la Libertad General de División José Miguel Lanza"), so there are two types of Order.
