Biography
In 1937 she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with a degree in painting under teachers Mieczyslaw Kotarbinski and Leonard Pecanski. During World War II, she belonged to the Lviv Artists' Union and provided assistance to artists of Jewish origin. In 1944 she took part in the Warsaw Uprising under the pseudonym "Malarka." After the war years she settled in the Tri-City, where she worked not only creatively, but also substantively. Józefa Wnukowa was co-founder of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Sopot (then the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk). As an academic teacher, she led the Textile Studio and the Art and Science Department of decorative fabric. Many successes against the background of artistic and scientific activities contributed to maintaining the title of associate professor in the Faculty of Painting. Works from under the artist's brush are characterized by boldly chosen colors, visible brushstroke and frequent references to ornithological motifs. As a weaver, she created ornamental, often geometric quilts in the horror vacui tendency.
