Own technique, collage, 35 x 64 cm, signed on the back: 'MWarzecha | 62/30'; sticker 'Desa Works of Modern Art' with description of work and destination: MUSÉE TEL AVIV
The offered work belongs to the artist's early collages, in which he juxtaposed inscriptions with arrangements of geometric figures, about which he wrote: [...] these were [mostly] works on cardboard, with sparing relief in the form of a few squares or rectangles, often symmetrically arranged, and with the motif of writing running perpendicular to the base. The dominant color was broken white, sometimes other colors appeared, but always subdued [...].
Bożena Kowalska characterized the same works in a similar way: [...] compositionally harmonious," she stated, "reduced by technical means to uniform tones of golden-brown patina color of time, they were characterized by care in obtaining great aesthetic value and precision of technical execution.
Painter, draftsman, stage designer and art theorist. He is one of the most important representatives of conceptual art in Poland, who was part of the circle centered around Tadeusz Kantor.
From 1948 to 1950 he was a student of the Faculty of Painting, and from 1952 to 1956. Department of Scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. At the same time, Marian Warzecha studied the history of material culture and art history at Jagiellonian University.
Even before his academic years, Warzecha experimented with form and techniques. In 1947-1948, his first collage compositions were created. In 1957, he was one of the founders of the Second Kraków Group and, influenced by Kantor, began a brief adventure with informel. After 1958, however, he returned to his school fascination with collage, which in time took on relief shapes. Even these early works foreshadow Marian Warzecha's later refined style and betray a predilection for austerity and precision.
In addition to numerous national expositions, the artist has exhibited his works in New York, Rome, Stockholm, Oslo and Vienna, among others.
