the work comes from the family collection of the artist from Cracow
Soter Jaxa-Malachowski was born in 1867. He came from the Malachowski family of the Gryf coat of arms, a branch that settled in the Kherson Governorate in the 19th century. He studied at the Cracow School of Fine Arts under Florian Tink, Izydor Jablonski and Wladyslaw Luszczkiewicz. From 1894 in he continued his artistic studies at the School of Drawing and Painting of Stanislaw Grocholski in Munich, where he lived until 1901. The sea is a favorite subject in the work of Soter Jax Malachowski. He was eager to paint pure seascape, showing its variation, depth and richness of color. The artist traveled to Pomerania almost every year since the 1920s. He traveled a lot and moved frequently. Each of the places he visited was recorded on canvas by the artist. Considered the best Polish marine artist, he is sometimes called "painter of the three seas." After completing his studies in Munich, the artist returned to Cracow, with which he became permanently associated and where he lived until his death, with breaks for travel and a two-year stay in Zakopane. The artist's best works were created before World War I, in gouache and watercolor and pastel. The artist died in 1952.
