Walter SPITZER
b. 1927 Cieszyn
Son of a Jewish liquor manufacturer in Cieszyn. He painted from an early age. In 1943 he lost his parents and was sent to Auschwitz himself. There he painted prisoners of war and guards for food. Transferred to Buchenwald, he found himself in the American zone after liberation. In 1945, he took up studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. To commemorate the death camps, he made a series of engravings, which he donated to museums in France and Israel. In the 1960s, he illustrated exclusive book editions. In the 1970s, he painted biblical and Jewish history subjects. In 1993 he made a sculpture for Buchenwald.
