Ludwik Markus, having abandoned his law studies in Warsaw, moved to Cracow, where he studied painting with Jan Stanislawski and Jozef Mehoffer. In 1903 he left for Paris continuing his studies at the Académie Julian. He became associated with the avant-garde art community and such figures as Picasso, Gris, Jacob and Apollinaire. To the latter he owed the adoption of a new name - Marcoussis, from the name of a sub-Paris town, sounding similar to his real name. The main thrust of his work was painting and printmaking.
