Magdalena GROSS
1891 Warsaw - 1948 Warsaw
Polish sculptor. She trained in sculpture at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Tadeusz Breyer and Henryk Kuna, and later in Florence. Beginning in the second decade of the 20th century, the artist took an active part in Polish artistic life, taking part in numerous exhibitions. She also exhibited her works abroad; in 1937 she received a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Art and Technology in Paris. Initially, she became famous as an outstanding portraitist. In 1930, the artist's attention turned to animalistic sculpture - this was connected with the fact that the Zoological Garden opened in Warsaw and the sculptor's fascination with the animal world exhibited there. Gross's works, most of which are small in size, are characterized by great simplicity of form while masterfully capturing the character of the animal depicted. Careful observation of nature is combined in these sculptures with decorative stylization and often - geometrization of form.
