Stanislaw Zagajewski (1927-2008)

Stanislaw Zagajewski, known in artistic circles as "Stasiu Śrubka" or "Wloclawek Nikifor," is an exceptional Polish self-taught sculptor whose work fully reflects the spirit of primitive art. He was born in 1927 in Kalisz, and spent his childhood in monastic institutions in Ciechocinek and Grab near Toruń. Despite the difficult conditions of his youth, Zagajewski discovered his passion for art from an early age.

Zagajewski's life was full of varied professional experiences. He earned a living as a cook, gardener, bookbinder, tailor, and also served as a night watchman and escort. His versatility also manifested itself in the arts - he made decorative elements in Warsaw's Old Town, worked on the construction of the International Music House (MDM) in Warsaw and on the W-Z Route. Despite his numerous professional responsibilities, sculpting in clay remained his greatest passion and passion.

He learned the techniques of firing clay forms in "Cepelia", where he created charming clay birds. His talent and unique style quickly attracted the attention of art lovers. The most complete collection of his works, which includes more than 120 sculptures, including several altars, is in the Museum of Kuyavian and Dobrzynian Lands in Wloclawek. Zagajewski's works can also be admired at the State Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw, the Silesian Museum in Katowice, the Ethnographic Museum in Torun and the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne. His works regularly feature in the most important exhibitions of Art Brut artists, winning recognition both in Poland and abroad.

Stanislaw Zagajewski is an artist whose works exude authenticity and a deep expression of emotion. His ceramics are not only utilitarian objects, but above all an expression of the creator's inner world, full of symbolism and individual style.
