Marek Bimer’s artistic work is a fascinating example of combining functional objects with works of art. The artist, who is not only a sculptor but also a graphic artist and designer, clearly demonstrates in his art a fascination with each of these fields. As he himself says, he likes it when his sculptures rust or develop a patina over time. He is passionate about industrial design, particularly objects that have been transformed—whether they originally served a different purpose or were damaged, cracked, or even subjected to the forces of nature—to create a new, original “product.”
Bimer works with various materials, such as clay, glass, metal, and resin. It was a resin sculpture that inspired him to create light installations when light happened to shine through it, and the artist was inspired by the shadows and colors cast through the openings. As he himself recalls: “My light objects, even when they are not illuminated, retain their own form and are simply sculptures, with the added benefit that they can also serve as functional objects” (Burkiewicz, M., Art of Living: A Visit with Sculptor Marek Bimer, “Label,” February 6, 2024).
The presented piece, “Fumo”—meaning “smoke” in Italian—is a perfect example of a form that, despite its static nature, takes on a sense of lightness and delicacy, much like drifting vapors. Marek Bimer’s lamp-sculptures are not merely neutral interior design elements but so-called “statement pieces”; the space should be adapted to accommodate them, not the other way around.
In May of this year, a retrospective, monographic exhibition of the artist’s work titled “Enlightenment” took place, where a broad overview of his light installations was presented across an area of over 1,200 m² in a former pharmaceutical warehouse in Warsaw. The standing and hanging forms, with their original shapes, lent the industrial hall a fairy-tale atmosphere, creating a perfect contrast with the austere interior.
