Abdülhamid II (born September 21, 1842 in Constantinople, died February 10, 1918 there) - Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He ascended the throne as a result of a palace coup led by Midhat Pasha on August 31, 1876, after dethroning his brother Murad V as insane. Initially influenced by Young-Saxon politicians and as a result of the parlous position of the treasury (bankruptcy of the state in 1875), he gave the state the Kanun-ı Esasî constitution on December 23, 1876. On April 27, 1909, as suspected of organizing a counter-revolutionary coup, he was dethroned and interned in Thessaloniki, and Mehmed V became sultan. He was also responsible for the Adana massacre that took place at the end of his reign (according to Wikipedia).
