Valentin de Boulogne, called Valentin (born 1591 in Coulommiers, died 1632 in Rome) - French painter of the Baroque period, caravaggioneer.
He was a pupil of Simon Vouet. Ca. 1614 he arrived in Rome, where he settled permanently. He became friends with Nicolas Poussin. He was strongly influenced by Caravaggio and Bartolomeo Manfredi. He created figural compositions with religious, biblical and genre content, characterized by naturalism of depiction, sharp colors and chiaroscuro effects. Some of his paintings were long regarded as works by Caravaggio.

Engraving after a famous painting by Valentin de Boulogne (1591-1632).
From a series of four paintings/ engravings depicting the four Evangelists. The paintings were first in the study of French King Louis XIV, which he acquired around 1670, and are now in the Château de Versailles.
The large engraving was made by Gilles Rousselet (1610-1686). He was a French Baroque engraver and dealer in prints. He was one of the most talented French engravers of the 17th century.
This is one of his masterpieces.
