Biography
Twin sisters Alicja and Bożena Wahl were born in Warsaw and both graduated from the Painting Department of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in Eugeniusz Eibisch’s studio in 1957. The artists have been exhibiting together since 1961. At their first exhibition at the Krzywe Koło Gallery, they presented ceramics, and at subsequent exhibitions, drawings and paintings. They exhibited their works on numerous occasions, including outside Poland—in France, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. In 1979, they established a gallery in their home in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district. The A.B. Wahl Gallery specialized mainly in art rooted in the tradition of surrealism, a movement with which the sisters themselves were also familiar. In addition to drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramics, Alicja Wahl, together with her sister, created set designs for *Kabaret Starszych Panów* and TV theater productions. They collaborated with the weekly *Kultura*, the magazines *Ty i ja*, “Szpilki,” and various publishers as draftsmen and illustrators. Until the late 1960s, their work was very difficult to distinguish. It was not until the early 1970s that it became more distinct, taking on individual characteristics. Color began to appear in Alicja’s work, and her palette became brighter. Female sexuality became the focus of her interest.
