Biography
Dennis Muraguri (b. 1980 in Naivasha, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Nairobi. In his practice, he uses printmaking, sculpture, video, and installation, focusing on urban culture, everyday life, and the social and political transformations of contemporary Kenya.
He gained recognition primarily for his works dedicated to matatus—private minibuses that form the backbone of public transportation in Kenya. Muraguri treats them as a distinctive element of the urban landscape, but also as vehicles of identity and grassroots expression. His woodcuts draw on the aesthetics of graffiti, music, fashion, and global popular culture, while also addressing the local realities of Nairobi and current sociopolitical issues. The artist combines observations of everyday life with the language of street culture to create dynamic images of the contemporary city.
Muraguri has been associated with the Kuona Artists’ Collective in Nairobi since 2005. His works have been exhibited at venues including the Vitra Design Museum, the National Museum in Nairobi, the Circle Art Gallery, as well as at the 1:54 Contemporary Art Fair in London and the Jo’burg Art Fair.
