Painting on paper depicting the Bodhisattva Mañjushri, the personification of transcendent wisdom in Mahayana Buddhism. The figure sits in a lotus position on a pedestal with a lotus flower, in his right hand he holds an upraised sword, a symbol of penetrating wisdom cutting through ignorance. In his left hand he clutches a lotus stem with an attribute traditionally associated with Buddhist sutras. Mañjushri's head is surrounded by a halo, and his finely detailed clothing is rendered in green, white and gold.
