Marc Chagall was one of the most outstanding artists of the 20th century—a painter, printmaker, illustrator, and creator of monumental works. He was born in 1887 in Lozna near Vitebsk, and from 1910 onward he was associated with Paris and the avant-garde scene. His work combined elements of Jewish art, Russian folk tradition, Symbolism, Cubism, and poetic fantasy. Lithographs hold a special place in his body of work, in which he developed a distinctive language of color, narrative, and symbolism. Chagall collaborated with Atelier Mourlot, one of the most important Parisian lithography workshops of the 20th century.
