Stanislaw Drozdz (Slawkow 1939 - Wroclaw 2009) - poet, installation artist, one of the most prominent creators of concrete poetry and animator of the concrete movement in Poland. He graduated from the University of Wroclaw with a degree in Polish philology in 1964. Initially he wrote traditional (linguistic) poems. For his achievements in this field, he received the main prize at the Fourth Klodzko Poetic Spring in 1965 - the Crystal Lion. Since 1967 he has completely devoted himself to concrete poetry, describing his works as "concept-poems." The artist explained the term as follows: Concept-shapes are both text and image: they concretize visually (graphically) the material shape of a concept [...] they are thus substantively-formally synthetic - like ideograms - codifiers of reality, integrating science (mathematics, logic) and art (poetry, visual arts). By means of extremely simplified, ascetic in content and form notation, the maximum associative effect can be achieved. Concrete poetry, as a language of radical abbreviation, provides a signal, an impulse for the viewer, on whose input depends the abundance of reception, which consists in "creating a poetic text" paved with the canvass of "notation." (S. Dróżdż, Pojęciokształty, "Odra", 1968, No. 12). He created both two-dimensional works (black inscriptions on white canvas or plexiglass) and spatial installations. These works - minimalist and almost mathematical in form - were usually accompanied by a deep reflection on time and transience. Since 1971, the artist has been permanently associated with the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw. In 1977, it hosted the premiere show of one of his most famous installations, "Between." In 2003 he represented Poland at the 50th International Bieale in Venice, presenting the installation Alea iacta est/Bones were thrown. He took part in more than 300 solo and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. He lived and worked in Wroclaw until the end of his life.
