oil on canvas, 60.5 x 81.5 cm
signed and inscribed lower left: "From Capri / F.M. Wygrzywalski"
Feliks Michał Wygrzywalski was an exceptionally talented and versatile artist, as well as a very hard worker—his body of work was highly regarded by both the public and the critics of his time. The sea was a subject in its own right for the artist. Over the years, he achieved exceptional mastery in rendering its structure. He was superb at capturing the transparency of the water, the movement of the waves, and the play of light on its surface. His paintings were enriched by elements such as emerging rocks. Enchanted by the atmosphere of southern Europe, he settled permanently in Rome. Over time, the sea became his greatest source of inspiration. He depicted it in various guises—sometimes calm, other times tempestuous. The sea appeared in Wygrzywalski’s works both as a backdrop for mythological and genre scenes and as the central motif of his paintings. He painted the Bay of Naples and the island of Capri particularly often.
