Hans Rottenhammer was the main representative of cabinet painting on copper in the period around 1600. His compositions show a strong influence of Venetian painting, which he translated into a small format. Between 1591 and 1606 he worked in Venice, then in Augsburg; he also worked for Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, as an artist and art agent. In the landscape, under a red curtain, Venus lies on a blanket and a large pillow looking curiously at the viewer. A small cupid holds a wreath of flowers above his head. Putto sits lower left weaving another wreath of flowers. To the right, the view goes to a green landscape where a round temple rises on a hill. The painting varies the composition of Rottenhammer. These paintings were modeled after famous depictions of Venus by Titian and other Venetian artists of the 16th century. Oil on copper, 24.2 x 31 cm
