Oil on poplar wood, 143 × 98cm
The painting shows the lamentation of Christ after the Descent from the Cross. John holds the stiff body of Christ. His body shows the pale color of death, the stigmata, the side wound and the wounds of the crown of thorns. Mary Magdalene, wearing a yellow robe and an olive green cloak, kneels on the right and holds Jesus' left hand and presses it tenderly to her cheek in mourning. Her blonde hair is only covered by a veil at the back of her head. In the middle, directly in front of the trunk of the cross, Mary kneels and dries her tears with her veil. Behind Mary, two other women are staggered in height, Maria Salome and Maria Kleophae. With the head of Johannes there is an ascending row of heads, which gives the composition a serious emphasis. In the background you can see a landscape, on the left with a view of Jerusalem, while on the right there are rocks with trees. Oil on poplar wood, 143 × 98cm
