The painting Winter Twilight by the River by Josef Ullmann (1870-1922) dates from the period around 1900, when the author devoted himself fully to landscape painting influenced by Impressionism. The scene depicts a quiet early winter evening - the low sun floods the landscape with a soft yellow-violet light that contrasts with the cold whiteness of the snow. Ullmann's ability to capture the atmosphere of changing light and the melancholic beauty of the quiet Czech landscape is typical.
