Ludvig Munthe (1841 - 1896) was a German landscape painter of Norwegian descent. He arrived in Bergen in 1858, where he initially studied with Franz Wilhelm Schiertz, a German painter and architect living in Norway. Later, Munthe moved to Düsseldorf, where he became a pupil of Albert Flamm at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He then chose Düsseldorf as his permanent home. Munthe is associated with the Düsseldorf School of Painting. His paintings are characterized by an entirely realistic treatment, and the dominant subjects are autumn and winter scenes in stormy or gloomy weather, views of forests and the coast. In 1878 he was knighted in the French Legion of Honor, and in 1881 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Saint Olaf.
