Matthäus Terwesten, the younger brother of Augustin Terwesten (1711–1781), who became the Prussian court painter in Berlin, worked in various places, especially in his hometown of The Hague and in Berlin, where his brother decorated palaces with ceiling paintings. . Venus, surrounded by putti, lies bare-breasted in a park on a red, shiny silk cloth. The purple curtain accentuates and shades the goddess. Venus, dressed in a golden robe and blue mantle, reaches into a basket of flowers and looks up at a putto holding the end of a garland of flowers. The other end is held by two putti in the shadow behind Venus. Two putti carry a large basket of flowers, and in front a putti sits on a stone and looks behind.
