Moritz STIFTER
1857 Vienna -1905 Mauer-Öhling
Austrian genre painter, orientalist and portraitist. He was the nephew of the well-known writer and painter Adalbert Stifter (1805-1868). Initially serving in the army, he later - from 1882 - studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Karl T. Piloty. Since 1899 the artist permanently lived and worked in Haag bei Neulengbach in Lower Austria. He painted primarily beautiful, graceful women; while capturing them in portraits or making them the heroines of genre scenes. They were dressed in various vintage or oriental costumes, depicted in lingerie, half-naked, in seductive poses. These paintings enjoy considerable popularity even today, finding eager buyers at art auctions around the world.
