Title: Gifts from Heaven
Description:
A white-haired man meets two female figures in a corridor, probably his daughters. Their postures seem to outline a particular event. The spheres represent gifts from heaven: one of them could, for instance, signify the old man’s healing.
The viewer should not expect dialectical descriptions that answer all questions, because painting does not obey such logic. Everything should remain approximate, dreamlike, and the ideas should only be suggested, never asserted. Translating the scene into words might evoke a thought like: “Wow, what are these spheres in the corridor?”.
The sphere is an object that fascinates everyone, because it embodies real, cosmic, and metaphysical values. It is the only solid without beginning or end, perfect like eternity. In this way, a new hypothesis about the nature of gifts from heaven introduces itself spontaneously.
The artist, S. Testa, is above all a metaphysical seeker. In this kind of discipline, there are no pauses: one remains metaphysical even when forced to talk about a mortadella sandwich.
Testa pays great attention to the subjects’ gestures. Facial expressions are not meant to indicate anything definitive, but only intelligent essences, never connected to everyday matters.
Regarding tonal aspects, the artist avoids the easy choice of strong reds for the drapery, because in this case they would have absorbed the reds of the flesh tones. Creating chromatic magic and harmony also means being aware of the illusions of visual perception. The most common is the phenomenon of color echo: using similar tones in different areas of the canvas can create improbable effects, polarize attention, or disturb the reading of the painting, as if the colors emitted a “visual noise” that distracts the viewer.
