Title: The Beautiful Prison
Artist: Salvatore Testa
Medium: Oil on cotton canvas
Size: 226 × 171 cm
Stretcher: Central cross; 70 × 30 mm slats with corner wedges
Description
The Beautiful Prison depicts the earthly world—captivating yet still a prison—hinting at life beyond our mortal path.
On the left, a man—like the birds—is turned to stone, unable to take flight or grasp life’s fullness.
On the right, a child rises from darkness and makes his first gestures toward the light, gathering the first fruits. Above, a small window with a peaceful, twilight glow suggests the chance to go beyond the darkness of daily habits; it points to the unknown—not as darkness, but as radiance.
Some figures revel and feast on fruit ostentatiously; others rest, ponder, or strike the vain poses of the world.
At the side, an Indian elephant symbolizes a metaphysical, salvific option that the others have not even considered.
