This magnificent secretaire desk is a superb example of the Empire period . The piece is characterized by its monumental, architectural form and the use of contrasting veneers. The main body is veneered in a beautifully figured walnut, while the columns flanking the central niche are ebonized, providing a dramatic visual contrast.
The desk is adorned with fine gilt bronze mounts, including classical motifs such as sphinxes and decorative capitals on the columns. The cabinet stands on robust paw feet, another hallmark of the Empire period. When the drop-down writing surface is lowered, it reveals a fitted interior with a central mirrored recess and a series of drawers, crafted to resemble a classical temple. This piece combines a powerful aesthetic with functional design, representing the height of early 19th-century craftsmanship. 152.5 x 95.5 x 46 cm.
