BOGDZIEWICZ Ryszard - Schroniska górskie od Beskidu Śląskiego do Czarnohory w latach 1874-1945. Lublin 2012. Wyższa Szkoła Społeczno-Przyrodnicza im. W. Pola. 4, p. 343. opr. oryg. kart.
Very good condition. Very rich illustrative material, among others from the author's collection.
From the preface: "Several authors have already written about the former shelters, especially in recent years, but always - in relation to one mountain range or a specific object. The present study, which was already written several years ago, but for various reasons is published only now, is the first attempt to cover all mountain ranges. The main feature of this work is that it is based primarily on source materials, and to a much lesser extent on previous studies, which has made it possible to avoid some of the repeated misrepresentations. It happens, however, that with such a great multiplicity of information presented, one encounters differences in the source materials regarding the same fact. Nevertheless, the maximum use of sources gives the reader a much more reliable message. Of course, not all source materials can be reached, and then it remains to reach for earlier studies and trust the reliability of their authors. Fortunately, as the years go by, it seems to be increasing.".
Info on the back cover: "This study covers tourist sites existing from the 19th century to 1945 within the 1939 Polish borders. Thus, in the west the boundaries of the area were the Silesian Beskid, and in the east the Czywczyn Mountains and the Hryniawskie Poloniny.
Also mentioned were hostels operating in the Silesian-Moravian Beskid in the so-called Zaolzie, whose area was incorporated into Poland in October 1938.
Exceptionally, several facilities located outside the Polish border, but in the border zone, were also mentioned, which Polish tourists used even more often than those from Hungary or Czechoslovakia.
The conventional beginning of the study is 1874, the year in which the first developed shelter (over the Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains) launched by a tourist organization began operations. As is known, 1939 brought an end to the activities of many shelters, including all facilities in the Eastern Carpathians, nevertheless, some of them, in the Beskid and Tatra areas, also operated under difficult occupation conditions. Therefore, the time caesura of the study is 1945, the post-war times already belong to a completely different period of the history of tourist development in the Polish mountains."
