La Treille Muscate.
Illustrations by Marianne Clouzot. Paris 1955. Marcel Lubineau, Publisher. 8, p. 65, [2], etchings on every page, leather-bound with book-binding.
A bibliophile edition published in a run of 575 copies; this is no. 442. Richly illustrated with original etchings (drypoint engravings) by Marianne Clouzot, depicting Mediterranean landscapes, gardens, flora, fauna, and scenes from Colette’s life in Saint-Tropez. The delicate, atmospheric prints perfectly complement the impressionistic nature of the text.
This is Colette’s book about her home and garden in Saint-Tropez, known as La Treille Muscate. It is primarily a collection of memories and impressions related to the place, nature, the sea, the garden, and the writer’s life in the south of France.
In it, Colette describes her surroundings, the plants, the animals, the landscape, the people, and everyday life in Saint-Tropez.
Colette (Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, 1873–1954) —an outstanding French writer, actress, and journalist, and one of the most important figures in 20th-century French literature. Colette was also the first woman to be awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, and in 1948 she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
A nice piece. Light beige half-leather binding with wide leather corners, decorative endpapers, and gold lettering and ornamentation on the spine. The spine is slightly faded. Condition: very good. Rare.
