The story presented in "Sigismund Times" is set in the last year of the reign of Sigismund Augustus. The protagonist of the book is a young boy, whose background and fate we learn about while reading this masterpiece novel. The plot begins when Maciek Skowronek arrives in Krakow and begins the life of a poor student there. From the beginning he attracts the interest of various people, some of whom try to surround him with care, while others have the opposite intentions.Human nature is unchangeable - today as then some people are driven by greed and pride. Kraszewski is a master of spinning intrigue in an excellent way while painting the life of 16th century Poland, which he considered far more colorful, boisterous and expressive than his contemporaries. The atmosphere of intrigue prevailing at the court of the dying king was superbly painted, but also the life of the Cracow townspeople, beggars and the Żak brothers. There is also no lack of descriptions of life in the borderlands of Poland, showing the constant terror of the Tatars.
