Grange is considered one of Australia's and the world's finest wines. Created by Max Schubert in 1951, the label is based on fruit of the shiraz variety, harvested at low yields from selected vineyards in South Australia and enhanced by maturation in American oak barrels.
Max Schubert made a winemaking trip to Europe in the 1950s; he studied the practices there that would become the basis for Penfolds in the years that followed. Inspired by mature European wines, he wanted to achieve similar results in Australia. The creation of Grange also marked the opening of a new chapter in Australian winemaking in general. The knowledge Max brought back from Europe, combined with his talent and flair, allowed him to create a new label that today has its place at the forefront of the world's fine wine.
The story of the creation of Grange wine is passionate and shows how much dedication, dedication and cleverness must go into the creation of something great. Penfolds is also a very strong commitment to values - at a time of very clearly outlined trends, the brand knows how to stay relevant, while still relying on the values that have shaped it from the very beginning.
The 2018 vintage received 100 points from The Wince Advocate showing that Penfolds is at the best point in its history. 97% shiraz complemented by a spash of cabernet sauvignon, the fruit of which was harvested in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Cale and Clare Valley. 18 months of aging in American oak barrels.
The result?
A deep, heavily saturated color, an intense nose based on blueberries and blackberries, followed by oriental spices, cedar wood, saffron, notes of earth after rain and freshly ground black pepper. The further into the wine, the more floral and smoky aromas. Infinite structure. Very strong body, precise despite the weight, smooth finish with a solid frame of tannins. It doesn't lack energy, high acidity carries it long on the palate. With great, even very great potential.
One of the world's best wines? Oh, definitely.
