Jones' novel, portrays the American military on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor, strips it of pathos. Jones reveals that the military, instead of making "men out of boys," creates captive automatons subservient to commanders. The language is coarse, blunt, realistic, and there are bold erotic scenes, but in between these passages are the philosophical musings of the characters. Although this is a novel categorized as war literature, paradoxically, war breaks out only in the finale of the book, which is primarily a story about man's struggle for dignity.
