The Drinker with a huge wine glass
In a courtyard, bordered on the left by a house wall and in the middle ground by a wooden fence, a laughing drunkard sits on a chair and joyfully holds a huge Roman filled with wine in his hand. The man is lanky, his face with red cheeks expresses naive, unreflective joy. The red hat with the large lobes shows that this is a ridiculous figure, as they also appeared in theatre plays at the time. A piece of pie lies on the barrel. A clay pipe, paper for tobacco and a small pot for coal can be seen on the floor. Drinking, eating and smoking as unbridled indulgence is thus the theme of the picture. In the distance, you can see the evening sky behind the trees. Oil on canvas , 40 x 32.5 cm
