Eugenio de Blaas (Eugen von Blaas) was born in Albano near Rome, the son of Tyrolean painter Carl von Blaas and Agnesina Auda, an Italian woman. His father became a professor at the Academy in Venice in 1856, where Eugenio de Blaas also studied. In Venice, Eugenio de Blaas established himself as a leading painter of genre paintings, which mainly featured young, beautiful women.
From 1884 to 1890, Eugenio des Blaas was an honorary professor at the Academy in Venice. The girl in a white dress sits facing right on a chair covered with a red, patterned velvet cloth. She turns her head and looks at the viewer in a friendly manner. Her brown hair is cut into a short fringe above her forehead. The girl wears a wide, light blue silk sash around her waist. She holds a white rose and a bouquet of lilacs in her lap. The painter masterfully evokes the lace and ruffles of the white dress and plays with the colors of the lilacs and roses. Signed and dated on the lower right: Eugen De Blaas 1880 . Oil on canvas, 70 × 50 cm
