The painting depicts the Holy Family (the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus and Saint Joseph) resting during their journey to Egypt to escape Herod's persecution.
According to apocryphal accounts, such as the Pseudo-Gospel of Matthew, angels offered fresh apples to the Holy Family during their rest, and a spring of water miraculously appeared.


This biblical episode is a popular theme in religious art, having been addressed by numerous artists throughout history. Oil on canvas 46 x 36 cm
