Painter probably 18th Century, after Anthonis van Dyck, The Rest on the Flight into Egypt

This painting depicts the biblical scene of the Holy Family resting during their journey to Egypt. The Virgin Mary is seated in a wooded landscape, holding the sleeping Christ Child in her lap, while Saint Joseph looks on from the shadows. The serene atmosphere and pastoral setting are characteristic of this theme.
The composition, use of dramatic lighting (chiaroscuro), and figure types are evocative of the Flemish Baroque school, particularly the style of Anthonis van Dyck. This work reflects the continued influence of the great master during the 18th century. Oil on canvas, 109 x 100 cm. (The canvas  is perforated along a length of approximately 8 cm on the right side, near the child. )
