Lot description
A massive guild chest from 1844, made of quality wood with rich marquetry on the front. The chest is equipped with two locks, which corresponds to the historical method of securing guild property, when two keys were needed to open it. The date 1844 is engraved on one of the bronze handles, and the name of the original owner on the other. The chest stands on turned legs, and its solid construction and precise craftsmanship demonstrate the importance of guild symbolism in the 19th century. It was used to store guild documents, funds or insignia.more photos
