In 1919, Lithuanians in the United States, gathered in the Lithuanian Numismatic and Historical Society, issued the first Lithuanian commemorative medal to commemorate the 1st anniversary of Lithuania's Independence. According to the projects of J. Kudirka and A. Račkaus, the medal was created by Albert L. Van den Berghen, a sculptor of Belgian origin living in the USA. 300 pcs. bronze medals were minted.
