CZESŁAW TUMIELEWICZ (b. 1942 in Lida) Czesław Tumielewicz, painter and graphic artist, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk since 1994, was born on November 20, 1942, in Lida. In May 1945, he was repatriated to a small village near Poznań. He has lived in Gdańsk since 1961. He studied architecture, painting, and graphic arts. He has participated in over 350 exhibitions in Poland and abroad. He received a scholarship from the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York in 1981. He has received over a dozen awards for his paintings and graphic works; including first prize at the National Exhibition of Young Art in Sopot in 1974; First Prize at the Spychalski National Painting Competition in Poznań in 1977; and one of 10 equal prizes at the National Graphic Arts Exhibition in Warsaw in 1973. He has participated several times in the International Print Biennial in Kraków (in 1971, 1984, 1997, and 2000), in the National Print Exhibitions in Katowice (1997, 2000/, and in the “Color in Printmaking” Exhibitions in Toruń (1982, 1985, 1988, 1991, 1993, 1997/, as well as at the Contemporary Painting Festivals in Szczecin (1972, 1974, 1978, 1998, 2000/ and at the Still Life Reviews in Sieradz /1997, 2000/, the Portrait and Self-Portrait Triennial in Radom /1987, 2000, 2003/. In the Gdańsk Society of Friends of the Arts’ “Graphic Artist of the Year 2007” competition, he received first prize. He is a recipient of the City of Gdańsk Award in the field of culture.
