Leon Michalski (1911–1989)—painter and printmaker. From 1934 to 1939, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the studio of M. Kotarbiński. He received his diploma in 1946. He practiced easel painting, mural painting, drawing, and printmaking. He held his first solo exhibition in 1948 at the Young Artists and Scientists Club in Warsaw. This was followed by more than a dozen solo exhibitions, including at the Zachęta in Warsaw (1960, 1968, 1977, 1986). He also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. In his work, he drew on the tradition of Polish colorism that emerged within the circle of the Paris Committee. He was a co-creator of the polychromatic decorations in Warsaw’s Old Town and in Lublin; in 1955, he designed and executed the ceiling of the “Bristol” Hotel in Warsaw.
