Rare denarius struck in 41 BC, during the turbulent years of the Second Triumvirate, when Rome was ruled by Marcus Antonius, Octavian, and Lepidus. The obverse depicts Marcus Antonius, one of the triumvirs, while the reverse features his brother Lucius Antonius, who served as consul in the same year.
Issued from a moving military mint accompanying Antonius’ army, the coin served a strong propagandistic role, emphasizing the political legitimacy and authority of the Antonii in their rivalry with Octavian.
