Issue struck during the final years of the independent Republic of Genoa, amidst the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1797, only a year after this issue, the Republic was transformed into the Ligurian Republic under French influence.
Beyond its numismatic value, the coin represents both the religious devotion and the political pride of late 18th-century Genoa with the obverse highlighting the Christian motto, and the reverse affirming the Republic’s sovereignty through its heraldic arms.
