One of, if not the finest example of this type! The obverse is centered, while the reverse is slightly off-center and concave. Minimal handling marks cause slight browning on the fields, with minute scratches and hairline marks. Superb in Proof condition.
The reverse of this coin may derive from the type appearing on an aureus of Augustus, struck at an uncertain mint—likely in the East—and may be related to one of the four heifer sculptures by the Greek sculptor Myron. Mattingly (BMCRE, p. xxxviii) unequivocally associates the reverse of this coin with Emperor Vespasian’s relocation of this statue from the Portico of Apollo—where it had been placed by Augustus—to his new Temple of Peace
