ANONIMO, Portrait of a Tutor

The portrait is a tribute to the intense activity of tutors and teachers who, in the 17th century, instruct, educate, and guide the young scions of illustrious European courts and families. Wise and learned figures, embodying solemnity and at times austerity, wear a black garment with the only points of light being the characteristic rabat collar and linen and lace cuffs of the white shirt. The flowing, white ruffle, known as 'alla sovrana,' is of clear Italian taste.
